Workshop Description
In this workshop you will hear of the importance and power of understanding and utilizing cultural diversity in programmes, events and in your own community. You will learn some tips on engaging Pasifika young people and some good practices when engaging diverse communities.
Speaker Bio
Viane Makalio currently works as the Pacific Engagement Coordinator in the University of Canterbury. He is a board member of the Pacific Youth Leadership and Transformation Council (PYLAT) who support Pacific young people to participate in all worlds in particular democracy. PYLAT have ran numerous events such as Dragon’s Den, iSpeaks and the Pacific Youth Parliament. The board members also sit on various boards across Canterbury and Aotearoa, New Zealand, which help to promote youth voice and youth participation. Viane is a proud Samoan, born and raised in Christchurch. He has extensive experiences in various levels in youth ministry and has worked with the Catholic Youth Team in Christchurch, as well as being a part of the Mission Team in 2012. He also sits on the Justice and Peace committee for Caritas Aotearoa, Youth Voice Canterbury advisory group, and is the youth rep for CHARIS NZ.
